In the last few days firefox started hanging everytime I tried to use gmail. This is using firefox 2.0.0.9 on three different systems. They were running Redhat Enterprise 4, Debian testing/lenny, and Debian stable/etch.

After much experimentation I discovered that if I disabled the html validator extension firefox didn't hang. Enable it and it hangs. It's very repeatable.

I know the extension didn't change recently, so it's either the update to firefox 2.0.0.9, or a change in gmail, but the only fix available to me is to disable html validator, which is unfortunate - I really like it.

I'm going to confirm this problem. Running WinXP and Firefox 2.0.0.9. It almost always hangs when I search in gmail and also when I try to view my spam box. Love this extension but it is currently disabled. It was also hanging a hotmail account. Maybe all this ajax stuff is messing with the extension?

Another confirmation here. But I think I've discovered the source of the problem... it's the new Gmail interface that just started going online recently for select users. If I have the addon enabled, Gmail either doesn't load at all, or locks up Firefox completely when I click the first link in Gmail, causing me to have to kill Firefox to continue. It still works fine with the old Gmail interface. (which, BTW, you can get back to by clicking the "Older version" link in Gmail) This is with Firefox 2.0.0.9 on XP.

I think it is due to a bug in Firefox that existed in Firefox 1.0.x and seems to come back.
It is a little long to explain when it happened in this version but it was due to timeout and javascript

This part of the extension code has not change since at least one year if not 2. Due that I do not use gmail (I got an account a long time ago) what would really great is that somebody that has such issue:
- or give a testcase on how to reproduce the issue (and I log a bug)
- or log a bug directly in bugzilla.mozilla.org on the javascript engine

What could be really great is to have a scenario where the problem always reproduce to give this to the developers of the core javascript of Firefox.
For example, a good thing would be :
- install the extension version xxx on firefox yyy
- login in gmail
- click here
- type this
- press Search -> hang

Ps: Also, you can disable /enable the extension site by site to wa the problem before to get a real solution.
- Right click on the icon and choose 'Disable for www......com'
- or go to the options and click on the button 'Enable the validation' Exception....

I just now sent you an invitation to start a Gmail account. I think if you try Firefox on WIndows with the Html Validator extension, you'll see the problem right away. When you log into Gmail, look in the upper right corner for the link "Older version" but don't click it. If you see this link, it means you're using the newer version, which is where the problem is. However, if you don't see this link, then it means you're on the older version, so please let me know and we'll find another way. I know that the Gmail people are only releasing the newer interface to some accounts, so I don't know which version you'll get.

When I have the extension enabled and try to login to Gmail, sometimes it won't come up at all (with an error from Gmail saying it's taking too long to load) or sometimes it comes up but then Firefox hangs when I click the first link in Gmail -- for example, the Inbox link, etc. Either way, I see the problem as soon as I try to use Gmail -- there's no particular duplication sequence other than that.

Please let us know what you find.

Can you try with Firefox 3.0 beta 1 and HTML Validator 0.842 ?

The fix is in Firefox 3.0. Not the extension. I think the same problem exists with Firefox 2.0 and HTML Validator 0.842.
The 0.842 is just the first version compatible with Firefox 3.0.

Maybe it is safer to take a backup of your firefox profile before. But not sure it will cause any problem.

Well, I found a quick solution without having to disable the addon. Firefox only hanged on me whenever I searched mail.

Anyway, what I did as suggested by someone in the Google groups is:

Allow gmail.com under Options > Exceptions

After I restarted Firefox and tried searching again, it doesn't hang anymore.

I loved this addon. but now i got problem on gmail. FF2 will hang on gmail search and while open the gmail spam box.

I tried on FF 3 beta 1 and addon 0.842 and the result is no hang anymore but still not working. I still cannot use the gmail search or click on the spam box. Only loading page will appear on my gmail with never ending.

Let me know if you got the same problem.

I have really the impression that this problem was introduced with a new version of Firefox 2.0.0.x.
I got report of 2 other pages with the same problem. It works always with Firefox 3.0 beta.

And strangely 1 of them works also with Mozilla Seamonkey too.
Due that I can't do anything in my code. I am thinking to add an auto-disable for the site who cause the problem.
Something like this:
- save a flag with the last validated site somewhere in Firefox on HD
- read the HTML cache
-> if it hangs during the call, when Firefox restart, get the URL and disable this site.
+ show an explanation
- if it works clear the flag.

I am not too happy to add this, but I see no other solution ? If you have other ideas please tell me.
